Behind every photo shoot there is a story, but behind this one I shooted for Collezioni Bambini Magazine there is an incredible one, made by talent, greatness and spontaneousness. A day, Maddalena Montaguti, the Collezioni fashion editor and stylist, tells me about a 5 years old kid from Naples, funny and a little chubby, who is a real star on the web, able to sing and dance. I’m getting curious so I watch several times his videos and I try to place him in a ‘visual’ story. Suddenly I think “What about a Fellini-kind-of story?“. Exactly, something like the 8 1/2 movie, with ‘mini-sized’ whimsical characters and those “Italians” atmospheres.
So… it all started.
Dietro ogni servizio fotografico c’è una storia, ma dietro questo servizio fotografico scattato per Collezioni Bambini c’è una storia bellissima, fatta di talento, bravura e spontaneità. Un giorno la stylist e fashion editor di Collezioni, Maddalena Montaguti, mi parla di un bimbo napoletano di 5 anni, buffo e un po’ tondetto che sul web spopola cantando e ballando come una piccola star. Mi incuriosisco, guardo e riguardo i suoi video e cerco di collocarlo all’interno di un racconto “visivo”. A un certo punto penso “E se fosse come in un film di Fellini?”. Sì, qualcosa alla 8 1/2, con personaggi stravaganti in versione “mini” e quelle atmosfere così “italiane”.
E così è nato tutto.

I start to have a look to the location, for that reason I circumscribe an area between Veneto and Emilia Romagna regions, just because that part of Italy is often represented in Fellini’s movies (he was born in that area). Do your remember Amarcord movie? Exactly those landscapes. In the meantime, I contact the parents of the kid. He is already a little star, or this is what the people who represent him thinks, so I have to face a lots of excessive requests and I got the feelings to talk with unreliable persons. I prefer to give up and, confident in the power of the web, I put on my personal FB page a post, looking for ‘my’ Fellini-inspired kid: histrionic, expressive, little chubby, and – why not – able to sing and act. At the end, I find him! Andrea De Vita is very talented and he gave us an incredible performance, a very rising star!
Comincio a concentrarmi sulla ricerca della location, e circoscrivo un’area fra Veneto ed Emilia Romagna, proprio perché di quegli scorci è piena la filmografia di Fellini (che in quelle zone ci è nato). Ricordate Armarcord? Ecco, proprio quelli. Nel frattempo contatto i genitori del bimbo. Ormai è una piccola star, o almeno così pensa chi si occupa di rappresentarlo, e mi trovo di fronte a una serie di richieste eccessive e soprattutto mi sembra di parlare con persone poco affidabili. Ho preferito lasciar perdere e, fiducioso nel potere del web, ho messo un annuncio sulla mia pagina Facebook, descrivendo le caratteristiche del “mio” bambino “felliano”: espressivo, istrionico, con qualche chiletto in più, e che magari amasse cantare. E alla fine l’ho trovato. Andrea De Vita è un vero talento naturale che ci ha regalato un personaggio fantastico, una vera stella nascente!

But.. let’s go back to the story. The location: I’ve driven for about 800 kilometers in one day, traveling far and wide for the Venetian coasts. Suddely, in front of me, it appears an old country cottage intended for hunting and fishing, in the province of Padua. A perfect location, a big house among sea, sand and sky. The lodge is managed by the Province of Padua office and for this reason we had to ask for the permission to shoot in that. I’m still so thankful to the Province of Padua Office for the opportunity they gave us and to Mr. Francesco Garbo who has supported us during all day.
Ma torniamo a noi, dicevamo, la location: ho percorso quasi 800 km in un unico giorno guidando in lungo e in largo per le coste venete. All’improvviso, mi sono trovato di fronte un vecchio casone di caccia e pesca nel padovano. Un posto praticamente perfetto, una grande casa fra mare, sabbia e cielo. Il ‘casone’ è gestito dalla Provincia di Padova e così ci siamo mossi per tempo per ottenere i permessi. Ringrazio ancora la Provincia di Padova per la possibilità che ci ha dato, e il signor Francesco Garbo per averci aiutato nella gestione del set con tanta pazienza, facendoci sentire perfettamente a nostro agio.

Arrived at this point, we had to organize everything for the photo shoot: a huge job of production with the twins Evie and Molly Smith coming from England, Catherina Christensen from Brescia, Martina Scarioni from Milan and Andrea De Vita from Naples. I wanted to make everything easy and I booked a stay for everybody the day before the photo shoot nearby the location, in the way the kids could be well rested for such an intense working day. It was really like to make a puzzle box among ticket trains, airplanes, hotels, bed and breakfast, timetable… but finally here we are all together in a hot day of May! It was an incredible work, Maddalena Montaguti created a simply gorgeous styling so did Loris Rocchi with the grooming.
A questo punto non rimaneva che mettere in piedi il team e coordinare ogni cosa per il giorno del servizio: un lavoro di produzione decisamente imponente con le gemelle Evie e Molly Smith in arrivo dall’Inghilterra, Catherina Christensen da Brescia, Martina Scarioni da Milano e Andrea De Vita da Napoli. Ho voluto che tutti dormissero nei paraggi il giorno precedente lo shooting proprio perché volevo che i bambini fossero il più riposati possibile per questa giornata di lavoro così intensa. E così con un gioco di incastri fra treni, aeri, alberghi e bed & breakfast.. ed eccoci riuniti in una calda giornata di maggio! E’ stato un servizio incredibile, Maddalena Montaguti ha creato uno styling semplicemente strepitoso così come Loris Rocchi, che si è occupato di trucco e capelli.

The pasta we cooked on set. We bought the tomato sauce at the supermarket, but it seems that the kids appreciated it a lot (at the end of the photo shoot I caught the twins eating some cold pasta directly from the pan!)
The kids were fantastic as you can see in the pictures below. I wanted to make a real short film, with the kids acting, but unluckily we had so short time, so I edited some video clips taken between one shot and another one. As audio track I used the monologue of 8 1/2 movie in which Marcello Mastroianni plays Fellini himself and tells the beginning of a new visionary movie of which we’ve never seen the end but I’d like to think it resembles a little to this one.
I bambini sono stati fantastici e il risultato lo potete vedere in queste foto. Avrei voluto girare un vero e proprio corto, facendo recitare i bimbi, ma purtroppo la giornata è volata, così ho montato degli spezzoni video ripresi fra uno scatto e l’altro. Come audio ho utilizzato il monologo di 8 ½ in cui Mastroianni interpreta Fellini stesso e racconta la nascita di un nuovo visionario film di cui non abbiamo mai visto la fine, ma che mi piace pensare assomigli un po’ a questo.
